Energy Management…… Yes,… Energy Can be Managed Too….

World is moving fast,.. very very fast,. unbelievably fast  some of us even can’t fathom of. But, why bother ? Just move with the flow….

But there is one problem,.. you will be left alone, others will move on. While some still think about how to reduce waste  during transport of vegetables (and still looking for a solution) others are looking into change the molecular structure of the cancer drug or some other important drug, or trying to find a way to utilize carbon dioxide as a raw material to generate liquid fuel…. Two worlds apart.

Third world countries encounter many problems; in fact they don’t have time to invest into more complicated problems. They have to face population boom, poverty, unemployment, most of all irregularities in the governance aka corruption and waste. Since their priorities are way different from the developed countries, energy management has never occurred to be a significant concern to anyone in the third world countries. The irony is, they are  the people responsible for the increasing global energy consumption, not the developed countries. Developing countries, mainly China and India takes a big chunk of global energy production, so does the pollution. Although they are trying or pretending of trying to control the issue, the statistics point otherwise.

World Energy Consumption

 The breakdown of global energy consumption shows the increasing trend of coal and natural gas usage,. however this trend is now slowly changing towards the renewable resources as the world is focusing on using less and less fossil fuel sources for energy consumption. Unfortunately the third world leaders are yet to realize the danger of depending on the fossil fuel. Sri Lanka is now in the receiving end since their crude oil supplier, Iran has got US trade sanctions, and as a result losing billions of dollars. It’s unbearable for a small country like Sri Lanka, but it seems to be OK with the authorities.  Planning is not the best practice in Sri Lanka. Sapugaskanda oil refinery went on regular two week maintenance, but we don’t have enough refined oil stock for next two weeks, according to the news items. Following the repairs, there will be another price hike, there are hints.

Even though this new trend on renewable energy continues, it will not be sufficient enough to fulfill the projected 35 TW global energy requirement by the year 2030. Just like in every other sector, the energy is also manageable. In short, energy management is the process of monitoring, controlling, and conserving energy in a building of an organization. However, this model applies to a system where three wasteful elements; wastage of other resources, inefficiency, and corruption is eliminated if not controlled. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka all these elements work on tandem and adds to the tax giving enough burden to the consumer. Before the commencement of the Chinese built thermal power plant, the minister of power and energy boasted about reducing the electricity prices, yet we were fighting against frequent breakdowns until recently. Our feeding reservoirs for hydro-power generation are half filled with sediments and mud, but I am not aware of any solution to clear them up to increase the storage capacity.  Out upcountry lands are fully occupied with vegetable cultivation and tea, the rest belongs to pine cultivation, which none contribute to preserve the feeding area for the reservoirs, hence we rely on the rain to fill them: unfortunate, bad planning. But still we are not too late to start over.

While planning energy management, the government can work simultaneously on all these areas to increase the efficiency,  capacity, and to have a long term vision on energy generation. Energy management can be initiated by the electricity board, and lead by example from itself: But, will they do it ?

Typically energy management involves several key steps:

  1. Metering your energy consumption and collecting the data.
    • Since the metering system is currently in effect, this step is already being implemented.
  2. Finding opportunities to save energy, and estimating how much energy each opportunity could save. You would typically analyze your meter data to find and quantify routine energy waste, and you might also investigate the energy savings that you could make by replacing equipment (e.g. lighting) or by upgrading your building’s insulation.
  3. Taking action to target the opportunities to save energy (i.e. tackling the routine waste and replacing or upgrading the inefficient equipment). Typically you’d start with the best opportunities first.
    • Each appliance takes up different amount of energy. Tungsten bulbs waste more energy than CFL, and LED bulbs consume almost 80% less than both of the above mentioned.
    • Energy Star ® appliances comply to less energy consumption and replace any regular appliance/equipment with Energy Star ® appliance.
    • Unplug the electrical items when they are not actually being used can save about 10% of the total electricity bill. Right now, a typical household has only one equipment that needs continuous power supply : the refrigerator. All the other appliance can be unplugged after the use, and you can see a clear difference.
    • Manage time by using an electrical item/equipment. For example, ironing the clothes can be done at once for the whole household rather than ironing them in different times of the day or week.
  4. Tracking your progress by analyzing your meter data to see how well your energy-saving efforts have worked.

Energy management applies in all the sectors that involves at least a bit of energy: Basically everything. From power/energy generation to the household consumers, everyone in between can contribute in their own capacity for energy management. Private sector has the opportunity to increase their profit and the public sector can minimize its losses by the same system.

Life Really Sucks,.. Suck it up and face it head on……..

During  last 20 years of my life, I dealt with chemistry and life all around the world; I was lucky enough to meet various personalities: from prison inmates to company directors CEO’s, owners, politicians and what not…  When I was working at ITI as a novice research assistant, I met a prison inmate, and learned about their life, and prison life, which kept myself away from possible troubles; I have met several successful individuals as high ranking officials, owners and regulators of different organizations; worked with toddlers as well as world renown professors of chemistry, and everyone in between. during my Ph.D. and postdoctoral period, I dealt with hundreds of graduate students. Most of them are foreigners, some Sri Lankans. Each of these personalities are unique. Different from each other. Random, law of entropy.

All these experiences are invaluable, but it doesn’t make my life perfect, I am still learning… The stereotype is: students. Been there, done that, I had the same experience. They are so special to me since most of them directly dealt with me and asked for advice, and I did not hesitate to offer my help.  Most are in the age group of 21-30.  Among them majority are girls; Don’t ask : Wouldn’t tell.

Most of them had one common complain,. My Life Really Sucks. !

Really ?

Life is a philosophy, life is a war, life is a song, and what not…. Many philosophers and religious leaders have preached about life in many avenues: Google it.  In my opinion, life is a war: from beginning to the end. If one is successful at the first attempt, still it’s a war between the parents: you know what I mean. Some have hard time conceiving a child. Some go to greater extents to get remedies, trials, etc.  Once a sperm start swimming upstream, it faces million obstacles to beat the siblings to conceive an egg. The toughest war is won. During the nine months of pregnancy, the parents are in a battle to provide proper nourishment to the fetus and the mother. Once the nine months are passed, both the mother and the newborn  fight to get him/her out: another war. It’s not over yet,. Surviving many wars, you are here now. Life is a war,… Once you are ready to leave this life, still it’s a war,. You are fighting for your life, doctors, relatives are fighting for your life : you leave them, leaving the war to the others to arrange your funeral: THE LIFE IS A WAR !

During this war, we face a load of experience. Some are sweet, some not. But we always remember the bad experience. That’s the human nature, we never cherish the sweet moments of our life and ponder them, instead we cry over the sad moments. So you conclude : Life sucks.. ! Is this fair ?  Can someone’s life suck all the time ? I wonder,.. is it his/her lack of planning ? Or overconfidence ? Or being at the wrong place at the wrong time ? Or all of the above ?

Some plan their life very well, hence become successful. Some are too emotional, follow the others and plan their life, but fail. For example some do not try hard. giving up leads to misery. Winners never quit, quitters never win.  Most of us have support groups to get help in hard times,.. I have my dad and uncle. Between them I get most of my answers. I do have plan A, B and C. But still I fail sometimes. I feel life sucks.

It’s time, if not you have not already started. Plan the life, have a plan A, B, and C, Have a support group. Life is a gift, enjoy it. Admire the good memories, learn from the mistakes. You will see the transformation.

Life sucks,.. Suck it up and face head on… You will win.

Population Boom and the Future of the Energy Crisis.

The world population hit 7 billion mark recently, precisely 7,044,110,246 by the April Fool’s Day. During the pre-industrial era the population growth was not significant enough to make a big impact on the environment, and the lifestyle of the pre-industrial era human was not as complicated as the modern man either. The world population in 1900 was just 1.7 billion, and within 50 years it passed 2.5 billion with over 50 % increase. By the year 2000, the world population crossed 6.2 billion. The predicted number in 2050 is a staggering 12.5 billion, which some doubt if the earth can handle the situation. Although the developed/industrialized countries handle the population growth fairly reasonably, the developing countries either ignore or overlook the population growth. Perhaps their cultural/religious beliefs cross the idea of birth controlling, or lack of knowledge contribute to the cause; whatever it is, the situation is gloomy.

Increase of global population bring a load of problems. Over-crowding; shortage of food, water, and other resources; deforestation;  healthcare problems; and socio-economic problems are a few to highlight. With the near exponential growth of global population, the increase of human necessities bring the inevitable and obvious requirement: Energy. Some powerful nations initiated a few mini-wars during past few decades to invade the energy rich (rather oil-rich) countries. With the oil companies controlling the economy of the most developed and powerful country in the world, (even the decision making authorities) this energy war would turn ugly, if not worse than that.

Global Energy Consumption : Breakdown

Current global energy demand is approximately 15-16 TW, or little over 500 quadrillion BTUs, and the conservative estimates projects it will be quadruple by the year 2100, or doubled by the year 2050. According to IEA world statistics, in four years (2004–2008) the world population increased 5%, annual CO2 emissions increased 10% and gross energy production increased 10%. The major energy sources can be categorized  into two main areas: Fossil fuel sources and renewable sources. Fossil fuel sources include, oil, coal, and natural gas, while renewable sources can be hydro power, solar, wind, wave, geothermal, and other minor sources. Nuclear power belongs to neither of these, as it is non-renewable nor fossil fuel based.

Of all the sources, oil tops the chart of energy generation with coal coming second. Either it is oil or coal, the burning gives one significant final product except water: CO2. Previously, the energy pundits predicted that the oil reserves in the earth will be finished by the year 2030 to 2040. However the current findings have made them clowns. We will have fossil fuel for over 200 years, natural gas for over 400 years, and coal for 2000 plus years. These numbers exclude what we can have under the polar ice caps. The northern hemisphere political powerhouses, (US, Russia, Denmark, and some EU countries) already planning to dig the cleared arctic regions for more oil: They don’t care about the environmental impact at all. The limited amount or lack of it is not the major problem. The real danger is the impact on the environment due to the addition of CO2 and heat upon burning these fuel reserves to generate the energy/power.

ඇල්කෙමියාගේ රසායනාගාරය හයිඩ්‍රජන් සංවත්සරය සමරයි… කියවූ සහ ප්‍රතිචාර දැක්වූ හැමෝටම ප්‍රණාමය…..

ගිය අවුරුද්දේ අප්‍රේල් 13 වෙනිදා ඇල්කෙමියටත් කරන්න දෙයක් නැතිකමට බ්ලොග් එකක් පටන් ගත්තා… නමක් හොයන්න අමාරු වුනේ නැත්තේ ඇල්කෙමියා ඉස්සර ඉඳලම “ඇල්කෙමියා“ කියන නම බොහෝ දේට භාවිතා කරමින් තිබුණ නිසා.. ඉතින් මුලින් මුලින් රසායන විද්‍යාව සම්බන්ධ දේ පමණක් ලියන්න හිතාගෙන හිටියත්, සමහර වෙලාවට අරමුණෙන් අපගමනය වුනේ පුංචි පුංචි දේශපාලන කතා ලියැවිච්චි නිසා.

වසරක් ගතවෙද්දි ඇල්කෙමියගේ රසායනාගාරයට ගොඩ වැදිච්ච ගණන 11000 ක්. ලිපි නම් ලියැවුනේ පනස් අටයි. ජුලි මාසේ ඉඳලා ඇත්තම රසායනාගාරයේ වැඩ පටන් ගත්ත නිසා ලිපි සංඛ්‍යාව පොඩ්ඩක් අඩු වුනා. ජනවාරි මාසයේ ඉඳන් ඇල්කෙමියාගේ දිනපොත පටන් ගත්ත නිසා නිතිපතා ඇල්කෙමියාගේ රසායනාගාරයට ලියන්නට බැරි වුනා. ඒ වුනත් ඉඳලා හිටලා කවුරු හරි මතක් කළාම ඔන්න ලිපියක් ලියන්න ගන්නවා.

මේ අතරේ තමයි ඇල්කෙමියා පාඨක ප්‍රතිචාර අහලා ලිපියක් ඉදිරිපත් කලේ. ඒ අනුව සමහර අයගේ ඉල්ලීම වුනේ නැනෝ තාක්‍ෂණය ගැන ලිපියක් පළ කරන්න කියලා… දන්න හැටියට ලියලා දාපු ඒ ලිපියට ලැබුන ප්‍රතිචාර අනුව නැනෝ යන්ත්‍ර ගැනත් ලියැවුනා.. මේ වගේ ලිපි තවදුරටත් ඉදිරියට ඉඩ ලැබෙන විදියට ලියැවේවි.. නිතරම බලන්නේ කාට හරි දැනුමක් එකතු කරගන්න පුළුවන් යමක් ලියන්නයි.

දිනපොතත්, රසායනාගාරයත් යන දෙකම ලියැවෙන නිසාත්, ඇල්කෙමියාගේ ඇත්තම රසායනාගාරයේ වැඩ අධික බව නිසාත් සතිපතා නම් ලිපි ලියැවෙන එකක් නැහැ. නමුත් ඇල්කෙමිච්චිවත් ශේප් එකේ තියාගෙන උදේට උදේට ඇහැ ඇරිලා සතියක් විතර ලියන ලිපියක් ඉඳහිට පළ කරන්නම්. මේ ලිපි ලියන නිසාම මගේ අමතර දැනුමත් ටිකක් වැඩි වුනා කිව්වොත් නිවැරදියි….

ඉතින් පාට පාට පාඨක ඔබ සැම මේ ඇල්කෙමියාගෙ රසායනාගාරයට ගොඩ වැදිලා යම් දැනුමක් ලබා ගන්නවා නම් ඒක ඇල්කෙමියට සතුටක්. ඇල්කෙමියා මේ රසායනාගාරයේ ලිපි පළ කරන්නේ පොරක් වෙන්න හිතාගෙන නෙවෙයි. ඇල්කෙමියට කවදාවත් පොරක් වෙන්න ඕනෙත් නෑ… හැබැයි කවුරු හරි ඇල්කෙමියා පොරක් කියලා කියනවා නම් ඒ ගැන තර්ක කරන්න යන්නෙත් නෑ…. අනිත් හැමෝටම වගේ ඇල්කෙමියටත් තියෙනවා දේශපාලන දර්ශනයක්. ඒක ආණ්ඩුවට පක්‍ෂද විපක්‍ෂද කියලා නෑ.. ඇල්කෙමියාට හරියි කියලා හිතෙන දේට හරියි කියනවා. එල්ටීටී එක වුනත් හරි දෙයක් කරනවා නම් ඒක හරි කියලා කියන්න ඇල්කෙමියා පසුබට වෙන්නෙත් නෑ… ආණ්ඩුව කරන හරි දේ අගය කරන්න වගේම වැරදි දේ විවේචනය කරන්නත් ඇල්කෙමියාට කොන්දක් තියෙනවා. සමහරු ඇල්කෙමියාගේ රසායනාගාරය දේශපාලන බ්ලොගයක් කියලා වරදවා වටහාගෙන තිබෙනවා ලු. ඒත් ලංකාවේ සිදුවන දේ ගැන විවේචනය කිරීමේදී සමහරුන්ට මේ බ්ලොගය දේශපාලනිකව පෙනෙනවා ඇති. නමුත් මේ සටහන්වල අරමුණ වන්නේ දැනුම බෙදාහැරීම පමණමයි…

ඉතින් සුපුරුදු පරිදි පුළු පුළුවන් වෙලාවට ඇල්කෙමියා මේ රසායනාගාරයට ගොඩ වැදිලා අළුත් යමක් ඔබට දේවි… ඇල්කෙමියා මේ රසායනාගාරය කරන්නේ හිට් ගණන බලාගෙනත් නෙවෙයි…. හැබැයි කවදාවත් මේක ඇල්කෙමිච්චි නං හැක් කරන්නේ නෑ කියන එකත් ඔය සමහර ඇත්තන්ට මතක් කරලා දෙන්න ඕන…..

එහෙනම් ඔබ සැමට සුබ අළුත් අවුරුද්දක් වේවා… වැඩි වැඩියෙන් කියවන්න ලියන්න ලැබේවා…. !

මමත් 50 ක් ගැහුවා ඕං

මගේ ලිපි බලපු, කියවපු, විවේචනය කොරපු, බැනපු, සහ කොමෙන්ටු දාපු සියළු දෙනා වෙතටයි,

2010 අප්‍රේල් 13 වැනි අවුරුදු දා සිට පසුගිය මාස කිහිපය තුළ මගේ ලිපි 49 කියවා, ඒ පිළිබඳ පැහැදී හෝ අපැහැදී කොමෙන්ටු දැමූ සහ නොදැමූ ඔබ සියළු දෙනාට මාගේ ප්‍රණාමය පිරිනමමි. ඒ කාළය තුළ 8300 කට අධික ප්‍රමාණයක පිරිසක් ඇල්කෙමියාගේ රසායනාගාරයට ගොඩ වැදී ඇත.

මම මගේ ශක්ති ප්‍රමාණයට ඔබව දැනුවත් කිරීමට උත්සාහ කරමි. දන්න සිංහල ටික හරියට ටයිප් කරගෙන සහ අන්තර් ජාලයේ සැරිසරා ඔබ වෙත මේ කරුණු ගෙන එන්නට මම ඇල්කෙමිච්චිගෙන් ද බැණුම් අහගෙන නිතර වෙහෙස වෙමි. ඈ නිතර කියනා පරිදි, “ගෙදරට කිසිවක් නොකර ලෝකය හදන්නට යන” පුද්ගලයන් ගොන්නට සමහර විට මම ද එක් වෙමි.

මගේ රාජකාරි ජීවිතය සහ පවුල් ජීවිතය සමබර කරගෙන මේ කාරිය කිරීමේදී නිතර නිතර ලිපි පළකිරීමට අපහසු වීම ම හාෆ් සෙන්චරිය පසු කිරීමට මෙපමණ කළක් ගත වීමට හේතුවයි. එසේ වුවත් මා වැඩිපුර අවධානය යොමු කරන්නේ ලිපියේ ගුණාත්මක බව සහ එයට ඇතුළත් කරන කරුණුවල නිරවද්‍යතාවය නිසා මම මගේ ගමන මේ ආකාරයෙන් හෙමින් යාම පිළිබඳ මට ගැටළුවක් නොමැත.

මෑතක දී මා “ඇල්කෙමියාගේ දිනපොත” ද ලියන්නට පටන් ගත් අතර එය ද ළඟදීම ඔබගේ සින්ඩිකේටරයට ලැබීමට කටයුතු කරමින් සිටිමි.

ඉඳහිට දේශපාලනය සම්බන්ධයෙන් ලිපි පළකළද, මගේ අවධානය යොමුව ඇත්තේ ඔබව වචනයකින් හෝ දැනුවත් කිරීම පිළිබඳවයි. මේ වසරේ මාගේ ලිපි බොහොමයක් අධ්‍යාපනික වශයෙන් සහ ප්‍රජා සෞඛ්‍යමය වටිනාකමක් ඇති ලිපි බවට පත් කිරීමට මම උත්සාහ කරමි. තනිකරම රසායන විද්‍යාව සම්බන්ධ ලිපි පළකල හැකි වුවද, සාමාන්‍ය පාඨකයාගේ රසායන විද්‍යා දැනුම හා මගේ ලිපි අතර පරස්පර තිබිය හැකි බැවින් ඔබට තේරෙන අයුරින් ලිපි ලිවීමට මා සැමවිටම උත්සාහ දරමි.
